Utah's 2nd Good Idea, ever.

Sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due. Unfortunately, that place is Utah. They were the first state in the Union to institute a 4-day work week for their government office employees. And the benefits were astounding. Not only for the workforce, but for the environment and the local economy. That's right, the state that brought you the masterful ebony/ivory pick-and-roll duo, has also made one of the most progressive moves in recent workforce history. Go figure.

You can read all about it in this post from Good.is. (Which is an awesome publication, by the way). Here's the article:

New Name for Brews & Booze

I'm doing a little marketing facelift to B&B. First off, I've changed the name to "The Brewthusiast." Yes, it's kinda clunky. Whatever. I've also changed the layout.

Nothing else changes. You still log into it exactly how you used to and post to it the same way as always. The only thing that changed is the address:

http://thebrewthusiast.blogspot.com/

That's all. I'm sure there'll be some complaints. But I think the new name and look is a little more appealing to the 3.7 people that stumble across it every month. Plus, I'm going to start a twitter account for it...maybe garner some more readers (and ad-clickers!). I honestly think this thing could get some good traffic if we put a little effort into it. And traffic = people clicking on ads = money = beer for the tailgate and other events.

I mean, wouldn't that be sweet if we funded our beer drinking by writing about beer drinking? The answer is yes.

It's just a thought. It might not work, who knows. But I thought we could try it for a little while. and if it sucks, we'll go back to the old-stylee.

Anywhoo. So those that have been contributing, keep it up, please.
Leave all your complaints in the comments.
thanks.

The RV Playlist

Let's say you owned an RV. Just hypothetically. And let's also say, just hypothetically, you were going to throw numerous tailgates...a few will be 7+ hours long. Now, during this tailgate you're going to need some music. Hypothetically speaking...what tunes would you be jammin' during such an event? If you had to make a 7-hour playlist, what music would be on it? Hypothetically.

Cold

I know we had a small cold front come through the rockies, but I have to share what happened this morning.

It is August 17 - I woke up, got into my car and turned my windshield wipers on to remove the moisture that was on my front and rear windshields. That didn't seem to work for the rear windshield...oh, that is because it was frost! Wow, frost in August. I am scared for this winter. :-)

Spano is out.

In just one day I have to make an addendum to yesterday's post.

Some tough news hit Huskerland yesterday as it was confirmed that Kody Spano, the lead candidate for the backup quarterback job, has torn his ACL. Spano, a redshirt freshman had been in the system for over a year and knew the offense better than any other backup candidate. So...in follow up to yesterday's post, we are now in a little bit of trouble with quarterback depth. But I hope I'm wrong. I hope one of these guys ends up being awesome:

Latravius Washington - A touted quarterback in high school, Washington switched to linebacker at college. So that should give you an indication that this is a big dude. Body-wise, he's very reminiscent of Jamal Lord. And he has an absolute canon for an arm. Now get this...he's from Bradenten Florida, the same hometown of Tommy Frazier. And Washington also wears #15. The hangup? He's only been learning the offense for 9 months.

Cody Green - The future. This true freshman was recruited to be the next great QB at NU. He's big, he's strong, he's fast. The hangup...he's new to the system. He's been here since the spring, but that still only gives him a couple months under Watson's offense. They say he's very mature mentally, but it's a whole different ball game when you've just thrown an interception in front of 85,000 screaming fans. But, word is, this kid is the real deal, he just might night have a good enough grasp of the offense to come in and win a ballgame if needed.

Taylor Martinez - The california player of the year. Or maybe it was just the LA-area player of the year. Either way, this kid went way under the radar - not getting recruited by any big-name schools except NU. There was speculation whether he'd get moved to safety, but the current situation has put him in the QB hunt. The opportunity, apparently, Martinez was wishing for. Apparently he's just a baller. No eye-popping skills in any area...but the kid just knows how to win. The downside, again, he's real fresh. Just showed up this summer, so his knowledge of the offense is going to be just that - Freshman.

Ron Kellog, Jr. - A walk-on from Omaha Westside, Ron is no relation to Dennis Kellog. Apparently he's another winner. No insane skills in any aspect, just gets it done. We'll see. I think they brought him in just because they need a scout QB.

Should get interesting. I think at this point, they should just sit Lee in a lay-z-boy and tell him to hang out so he doesn't get hurt. I mean, Jesus. All this makes Patrick Witt's departure to Yale a lot more relevant.

Dig.

Life Imitating Art Imitating Life

So, if you're Michael Douglas' son, apparently you get pretty bored. How else can you explain the need to FedEx a bunch of meth to from LA to NYC and then try to sell it. It's not like this guy (Cameron, 30) is hurting for money. His step mom is Katherine Zeta Jones.
It gets better...while he was on house arrest his girlfriend tried to smuggle him some heroin inside of a toothbrush. Awww, lovey.

3.5 weeks.

If you're a little out of touch with local Husker media, here's a couple key points to follow as Game 1 rolls near:

1. The Backup Quarterback Competition. Zack Lee seems to have the starting position in hand. But the backup job will be an interesting battle between Cody Spano, Cody Green, Latravius Washington and Taylor Martinez. All of who, will be pretty darn good given some time. Spano is probably the front-runner...with Green not far behind. But Green is a true freshman, so we'll see if he get's a redshirt. If so, you'll probably see Washington as the #3, just because he's been here since spring and will probably know the offense better than incoming freshman Martinez.

2. D-Line. SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH. He's good. But he's going to get double-teamed a lot, so someone's going to have to step-up. Either Barry Turner or Baker Steinkeuler will have to really step up. Suh is great. But in order for the d-line to be great, one of those guys is going to have to rock out.

3. Linebackers. If the 2009 Huskers have any glaring weaknesses. This is it. Phillip Dillard was sold as the next Demario Williams, but he has been anything but. After an injury last year, apparently he got really out of shape and lazy. In others, when it comes to Linebackers, either some unknown has to step-up, or we have nothing.

4. Running backs. Helu and Castille are going to be a darn good 1-2 punch. But they'll only be as good as their line.

5. O-Line. Should be solid. But they have to be great. With a new QB, the Sker's are hoping to rely a lot on the running game. So this is the year we'll see just how good our line really is. But the personnel is there to be top-notch.

6. Special Teams. Our kicking game will be money, because Alex Henry is money. And now he might punt too. Whatever. On the other side of the ball, Niles Paul showed signs of being the big-time playmaker the Huskers have been looking for. But it will be interesting to see if anyone else steps up and competes for a KR spot. Look out for Marcus Mendoza. A running back turned Wide-out (slot-back), Mendoza can absolutely blaze. I look for him to be a contender for returning duties.

7. Safties / Corners. We have a stable of them. Look for our defensive backfield to be one of our strong spots. Eric Hagg, Larry Asante, Prince Amurakamamdadasdfalsdfhl...we should be good. And with Anthony Blue healthy, we'll be that much better...he's a baller.

8. Wide Reciever. Guess what? Todd Peterson and Nate Swift graduated. Other media outlets have noted that this is going to hurt us. I believe completely the opposite. Nothing against Peterson and Swift, they had great hands. But they were both products of the system. And they were in that system for what seemed to be 14 years. So what do we do now that they're gone? We reload the system with more good hands...that are probably even better athletes and open-field runners. And I'm talking about Niles Paul and Marcus Mendoza.

Okay, that's about it.

The countdown begins. Get ready rock. We'll see you at the RV.

**Nerdy Shit Warning**

Here's what happens, on the super-nerdy technical architecture side, to your plog posts once you hit "publish post".
Plus you'll learn via some pretty clean information graphics, which is a blast to look at. (Flipflopflyball and anything by this guy - Edward Tufte are some other good ones when you get bored) (which should be shortly after you look at the first one posted)
