Just saw these guys last night at the Fillmore. It's the realest rock and roll I've heard in real life. Seeing Jack White live more than solidified my opinion of his genius, so forgive any of the following fanboy gushing. Not to take anything away from the rest of the band- Brendan Benson's guitar skills are classic rock (I'm sure he likes to get the Led out) and his clean vocals couple dynamically with Jack's cat-scratched voice. They're not a pretty band-- the bass player is super dorky lookin... but I guess that's normal for bass players. I'm talking to you, Stefan Lessard. They're not a tight band-- coming in late on a verse a couple times, some miss-struck chords on the piano, and sometimes Jack's stuttering, taint-quivering solos can seem like they start on their own timing. But it all still comes together brilliantly to produce a sound that's not flashy, not pretentious, not abstract, just really really good. Even when Jack's mic went out for a bit, he just sauntered over and did 2 guys 1 mic with the other dude. It was way less vom-inducing, though not as phenomenal as 2 chicks 1 cup.Higlights:
>>>"Level" A teasing, ambiguous intro before laying into it hard. Real hard. Like the way I imagine Weiland has sex.
>>>Jack had some Peter Frampton/looping thingy (I really have no idea what it was) hooked up to his amp and used it for some intense vocals in "Steady as She Goes" and then fiddled with it later making some cool dj/record scratching sounding shit.
>>>Finale was "Carolina Drama," a great story-telling song belted out in desperation, letting the audience finish it's last words in dramatic (self-indulgent?) fashion.
