Tonight, going to see Del the Funky Homosapian at the Slowdown.
Tomorrow, headed to L.A. to do some advertising biz, but that's not the cool part.
Apparently I'm going to some "Music Industry Party" tomorrow night, followed by a weekend in LA completely paid by not me.
I'll be in touch.

Classic and Timeless
Good ol' Statler and Waldorf. The funniest part of the Muppet Show, bar none. You gotta give props to Jim Henson's creative genius. Ending the show with the same two hilarious geezers and keeping it hysterical every time. Amazing. The only part of the Muppet Show that even compares is possibly that chef that couldn't talk and runs around trying to kill a chicken.
Overall, just some down right creative stuff...and hilarious.

Memphis politics...Hollywood isn't ready
This article is unbelievable. The 5th term mayor, "King Willie" Herenton alleges his haters tried to frame him in a sex scandal. The former topless cocktail waitress involved alleges all sorts of other things.

The Problem With Some Business Blogs

I've been reading quite a few business blogs lately, and one thing that I'm constantly finding is that some business blog writers are arrogant asses.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great business blogs that keep it real, but look around and you'll find an array of blogs where the author starts with phrases like, "I was giving a speech at Dartmouth's super-elite college of business when a student asked me 'boxers or briefs'. That made me think...is my business boxers or briefs?"
Sometimes they'll start with crap like, "I recently finished my new book, How to Write a CEO Blog Without Sounding Like a Douche."
These examples are elaborated out of my frustration, but here's a real one:
"I was a freshly-minted adult when I graduated from Stanford Business School half a lifetime ago (23 years to be exact). Along with my classmate Seth Godin who was also a youngster when he graduated, I found all the theory that filled the biz school classrooms to be rather stale. Seth and I were so bored that we created our own independent studies course where we interviewed interesting businesspeople and asked them to share their rules for success (the result, “Business Rules of Thumb,” was the first book for us both…good luck finding a copy). -- Chip Conley, Fast Company Experts
Just look around the web and you'll find a ton of these.
I have a lot of respect for geniuses who've worked their way to where they're at, and I certainly have a lot of respect for business leaders who find time to blog. I think it gives great insight. But if they need to validate their credentials, they can do it in their "BIO" section, save us common folk from the pompous-party.

Woodhead Website

As I was doing my normal web searching I came across this pretty amazing website filled with all sorts of stats, pics, and even screen savers dealing with Danny Woodhead. I thought it was a fake link at first...but it was not. Check it out.

Again, B has his thumb on the social pulse...among other things.
Per B's previous post re: Across the Universe, the movie; 5 not-for-individual-resale bottles of Tabasco out of 5 not-for-individual-resale bottles of Tabasco.
If you at all appreciate, relate to, understand the Beatles and what they have done for music, you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. Also if you appreciate, relate to, understand the history of the Western Hemisphere from the 60's through the 70's, you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. Across the Universe is a well organized, creative blend of aforementioned items. I won't describe it any further as it would take verbose amounts of description to provide an accurate summary of how this movie travels. If you go see it, or wait for it on DVD, you will want to ignore your Western inclinations to not take musicals seriously. Its not really a musical, again, hard to describe. Its about the music.
Oh, and Bono makes some great appearances, and does a swell job of remaking a couple Beatles songs.

Nebraska Chicks Rock

By the way, we ran into Katie Nelson two weeks ago...IN OAKLAND? She's traveling the country with her equally cool/insane friend Shannon. They live in a Jeep and drive around the U.S. to rock climb, all while getting temporary jobs along the way to pay for things.
It's pretty wild, but I expected nothing less from good ol' Katie. You can check out their blog HERE, and I've posted a permanent link in the links section of our page.

Despite average ratings, this card comes with a free 'Quake Wars' (?!)
I was briefly looking for a computer hardware thing that would enable me to use my tv as my computer monitor. Glanced over and saw these gems of reviews. Note to self, Bioshock at full settings, Dx10. Different strokes I guess.
Love it, but not crossfire

Pros: Amazing card and extremely powerful. Runs Bioshock at full settings in Dx10 beautifully.
Cons: NOT crossfire.
Other Thoughts: Only bought one because of my budget, and I'm glad because this card does NOT support crossfire.
Great Card

Pros: Plays Bioshock with everything on maximum @ 1280x1024, and plays it smoothly. That's with stock clockings. So far this card's played great from everything I can think to throw at it.
Cons: Loses a PCI slot, which sucks since I only have 2 slots :(
Other Thoughts: I installed this system on a 2 GB DDR2 system with a 4400+ AM2.
Perman's News Release
From Omaha.com
In a new development in leadership changes in the athletic department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced today that Tom Osborne has agreed to serve as director of intercollegiate athletics on an interim basis.
Osborne left his head coaching post at Nebraska in 1997 after 30 years coaching football, including leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers to three national championships, 12 Big Eight titles and one Big 12 title. Osborne's teams finished in the top 10 17 times. He ended his head-coaching career with a record of 255-49-3.
Since Osborne left his post as 3rd district U.S. representative following a gubernatorial bid in 2006. He has been a senior lecturer in the UNL College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics.
Osborne met with Perlman this morning to discuss the interim post and Osborne agreed to serve, on an open-ended arrangement, until Perlman finds a permanent athletics director. Perlman on Oct. 15 fired Steve Pederson, who had held the AD post since 2002.
Osborne said he looks forward to the challenge.
"I've spent the majority of my life working with the Athletic Department at the university and I want to do what I can at this point to continue in the pursuit of excellence that has been previously established," he said.
Osborne said he anticipated taking over duties right away and would also finish the semester teaching his two classes, which he enjoys.
Chancellor Perlman said he is pleased that Osborne agreed to provide leadership and that the university will benefit from Osborne's vast experience.
"I am very pleased that Tom Osborne has agreed to help bring some leadership and direction to our athletic program. Tom is committed to making the entire program successful. He brings the right experience, an understanding of Nebraska, and our aspirations. I look forward to working with him."

The pride is high with NU moving on.

We're going to be your number one, midwest.
I'll say it; the Rockies look indestructible. I'm sure you've heard the break down on any sports update site/program/article so I will spare you the verbiage behind this historic run of all athletics. Are they fun to watch? Yes, if you enjoy fundamental baseball execution, and balls-deep bullpens. Can they out slug the A.L.? We'll soon find out. At any given at bat, 15 of 25 players can drop bombs. Not just one or two barrels. Is it luck? Safe to say any luck would have worn off a series or two ago. What brings me to spat this post is the most rewarding attribute of Rocktober, to me; Good ol' simple, starchy, bluecollar Midwest Pride.
To define the 'Midwest' its all a matter of perspective. Growing up in Nebraska the Midwest to me was a co-op in Julesburg, Husker flags outside every door on game day, pulling smallmouth bass out of an interstate lake. In Denver, the Midwest was Bronco-colored houses, Omaha, and the ability to purchase several acres of land.
Didn't know what to expect moving to the Fog-belt. Its dense, not the fog, the people; the diversity. One thing's for sure the people in/around the Bay see the Midwest in a different way. If I had a dollar for every Wal-Mart, whiskey, or livestock joke, I would probably be able to afford living here. But to the West Coast, the Midwest is iconically, Denver. Love it or hate it, its the L.A./ NYC of our beloved region. (Some may argue Chicago, I however stop at the Mississippi.) Omaha just hasn't filled that blank yet (although, give it 10 years, I believe it will). In a Western world where one constant topic of comparison from one region to the next lies with athletics (or at least with people I care to chat with), the Huskers have been more controversy than excellence. I'm not completely embarrassed by the Huskers, although I am about CSU. But I am quick to bring up Rocktober. I'd like to thank the Colorado Rockies for their contribution to Midwest Pride. Lets bring it home.
Note: I've had to shake plenty of hangovers from Coors field margaritas, loss after loss. Ain't no bandwagon here.
New AD will be "'Borne"
News conference today, supposedly to announce Tom Osborne as the new athletic director. Rumor through Huskerland is that Dave Rimington will be the associate AD and will fill Osborne's shoes in a few years due to T.O.'s age.
Rumors have also indicated that Osborne is not a fan of Callahan, but it's more than likely that he'll keep his job through the year.
Oh rumors. How fun (and a great Fleetwood Mac album).
Here's my opinion. I think Pederson and Callahan both truly have the best interest of the Huskers in mind. You can see the pain on Callahan's face, and I don't think it's due to fear of losing his job. However, what Callahan and Pederson see as the "best for the Huskers" is different than the Nebraskans see as the best. Callahan and Pederson tried to come in here with their high-profile shows and resumes, and they overthought everything. More times than not, the best solution is the simplest solution, and obviously the west coast offense isn't the simplest solution.
But Huskerland beware, college football has changed dramatically. And if you think that Tom Osborne is going to come in here and be a savior right away, you're wrong. Will he reestablish strong Husker traditions in recruiting and pride? Sure, without a doubt. But recruiting is much more high profile and the game is much, much faster than when Osborne ran the show. So Osborne and a new coach as the solution? We'll wait and see, but my bet is that it too will take at least four years. The same amount of time we've given Callahan.
I'm just a little disturbed by the fact that people are cheering in the streets for Pederson's firing. I think one guy from Grand Island actually named his son "Fire Pederson." It's crazy. There's no doubt change was needed, but the last time Nebraskans jumped for a quick change...look where it got us. And I don't care who you are, you were all clapping your hands 4 years ago as well.
Pederson gone? Fine. But if you make a coaching change, force Cosgrove to leave, but that's it, for now. Let Callahan finish the season then reevaluate. Don't leave the players without their head coach...which would be the nail on the coffin of a 4-9 season.

UPDATE: PEDERSON OUT
As of 2:15 today, Steve Pederson is no longer the AD at NU. Details to come at a press conference today at 4:00.
From the JournalStar:
Steve Pederson is out as Nebraska’s athletic director. It was announced at 2:15 Monday afternoon in a press release by Chancellor Harvey Perlman.
The move comes two days after Nebraska’s football team suffered its worst home loss since 1958, prompting widespread concern about the direction of the football program under Pederson’s most notable hire, Bill Callahan.
Less than three months ago, Perlman extended Pederson’s contract through June 2013.
Pederson, a North Platte native and University of Nebraska graduate, was hired on Dec. 20, 2002. He’d served the previous six seasons as athletic director at Pittsburgh, where he helped rebuild that program’s facilities.
Pederson initially arrived in Lincoln with great fanfare, lauded by many as a Nebraska native with Midwest values who understood the culture and would fit perfectly in his new position.
Those thoughts changed a year later. Pederson fired football coach Frank Solich in December of 2003, saying, “I refuse to let this program gravitate to mediocrity,” and that he wouldn’t surrender the Big 12 Conference to Oklahoma and Texas.
Those are comments critics have used against Pederson after each of Nebraska’s troubling defeats under Callahan’s watch. Callahan, in his fourth season, is 26-18 overall and 14-13 in Big 12 Conference games. Pederson signed Callahan to a five-year contract extension on Sept. 4.
The firing of Solich — which came after Nebraska completed a 9-3 regular season — was followed by a coaching search that lasted more than 40 days, prompting more debate. Pederson was criticized for not being open and honest with public and media.
Pederson has again been recently evasive, refusing to field fans’ calls last week on his weekly radio call-in show.
Pederson finally turned to Callahan, recently fired from the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. Before hiring Callahan on Jan. 9, 2004, several coaches turned down Pederson’s overtures, including Arkansas coach Houston Nutt, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders.
Pederson also helped revamp Nebraska’s football facilities, leading the $40 million expansion of North Stadium — a project that increased Memorial Stadium’s capacity to 81,067 and boosted Nebraska’s recruiting edge with a new locker room, weight room, indoor practice building and training facilities.
Nebraska’s self-supporting athletic department has remained in sound financial shape under Pederson’s watch. Other notable Pederson hires include Nebraska men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler, who’s been widely accepted by fans.
Pederson’s first job in college athletics was as an NU sports information assistant in 1980. He was Nebraska’s recruiting coordinator from 1982-86 and also served as recruiting coordinator at Tennessee and Ohio State. He returned to Lincoln as an associate athletic director for football operations from 1994-96 before leaving for Pittsburgh.

No need to pinch yourself. This is for real. According to MSN.com, Hulk Hogan has agreed to host the new American Gladiators, and one 80's child couldn't be more excited. Minus the Hulk part. He's a tool.
By the way, the photo above is from a SuperNES screen shot. I totally geeked out twice in one post.

Cool?
An Album That Costs What You Want It To
The members of Radiohead, the respected British rock act, said that the band would sell its new album, at least initially, exclusively as a digital download and allow fans to decide how much to pay for it, if anything.
Not really sure what to think about this. Sounds pretty cool--but also pretty stupid. Why would anybody actually pay for it? Sure, they're making a statement, but if something is offered for free, I'm taking it for free. And I don't really even like Radiohead.

Why you never turn your back on a baseball game.

After the Padres scored 2 in the top of the 13th, I thought it was over. Turned off the TV and went to bed...
I'm an idiot. Congrats to the Rockies who came back with three runs off of Trevor Hoffmann in the bottom of the 13th. Incredible.
So now that the playoffs are set...Go Cubs and Go Rockies. American league can eat a dick.
